How will they be able to address the problem if they don’t know what it is? Not only does a rep need to listen to all the customer has to say, he also needs to understand the customer’s meaning. This skill is honed and sharpened over the course of your career but it has to start with the right attitude and the willingness to listen.

Good communication skills, especially verbal. Customer service is usually done through call centers, and these make use of verbal communication more than any other means. You need to be able to convey information to the customer in such a way that he can understand. You will need to have a good command of the language, grammar, and even the right way of speaking depending on the customer’s emotional or mental state.

Being able to empathize. A CS rep has to be able to listen to a customer and place himself in the customer’s shoes or see things from their point of view. Empathy is being in touch with the customer, understanding his emotions and what he is going through. By being able to connect with a customer, a rep can provide a customer a better experience. Computer and data entry skills. Not all useful skills in customer service have to do with dealing with people, some are about what the company needs from you. In almost all cases, you will need to work with a computer and some software or program that needs your input about the call. It’s important that you have good typing skills so that you can record things without having to ask the caller to wait for you to finish typing.
